As the world marks World Environment Day 2025, Medplus, Nigeria’s leading retail chain pharmacy, is taking a stand against plastic pollution. With a global theme of “Ending Plastic Pollution,” Medplus is reaffirming its commitment to sustainability through a series of initiatives aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting responsible consumption.
Medplus has made significant strides in environmental responsibility, including a strategic partnership with Polymer Plastic Recycling to manage its plastic waste. The company has already been recognized as the Most Sustainable Retail Organisation at the 2024 Africa Retail Congress. This year, Medplus is building on that momentum with a focused effort to reduce single-use plastics across its operations.

The company’s 2025 campaign, spearheaded by Head of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Department, Kingson Elendu, includes a customer and employee awareness drive led by employee volunteers, a CEO message encouraging internal commitment to sustainability, and a vibrant social media campaign. Medplus is urging stakeholders to reflect on the urgency of the plastic pollution crisis and take meaningful steps to combat it.
The magnitude of plastic pollution’s damage is staggering. According to the United Nations, over 8 million tons of plastic waste enter the world’s oceans every year, harming marine life and contaminating the food chain. If that sheer volume of platic waste continues finding its way to the oceans, it’s estimated that there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050. This spell catastrophy for the environment and its inhabitants.

Medplus called on the public, customers, and partners to join the conversation and take action toward a plastic-free future. Together, we can protect our environment, preserve public health, and shape a sustainable future, the organisation noted.
“Every plastic item we reuse or recycle brings us one step closer to a cleaner and healthier environment,” Medplus’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Joke Bakare, said.
